100 Random Things About Me: It's the Remedy

This year has not started out the most healthy for me thanks to the the never ending cold which turned into a double ear infection. It is the time of year where everyone is getting sick and when you have a kid in preschool it is even worse. Last night Princess D came down with the stomach flu. After her last urgent visit to the "porcelain god" at 4am it got me thinking about my health. I am a relatively healthy person. I eat right (most of the time), take my vitamins daily and practice yoga as often as my schedule lets me. I have never broken a bone in my body or required major surgery. Over the years of very basic illnesses consisting of colds, the flu, strep throat, bronchitis and stomach flues I have developed some strong feelings towards remedies ...

46) I can't eat sweet potatoes ... the sight and thought make me gag. As a kid I would get the stomach flu every winter. My mom used to make me eat a bowl of mashed sweet potatoes since they are a natural remedy for digestive problems. Unfortunately, to this day I can't eat them because they remind me of such unpleasant memories. So, please don't try to serve them to me at Thanksgiving!

47) I believe a hot toddy is the best remedy for the flu. My mom used to make these for me the night I felt a fever come on. One mug of the stuff and I would get the best night's sleep and wake up feeling so much better. (Maybe it was the shot of whiskey that does the trick? Hmmm... )

48) Last year I discovered Yogi Tea Echinacea Immune Supportr. Not only does it taste good it really does shorten the duration of your cold. It is not easy to find, so I recommend you stock up when you do find it (and send me some since I ran out).

49) Who doesn't like Ricola? I love the stuff especially the Green Tea with Echinacea drops. Even Princess D likes how they taste. I carry them where ever I go especially if I am flying. Last week it practically made up my diet ... I went through 2 bags alone!

50) I believe in the B.R.A.T. diet if you have an upset stomach. If you haven't heard of this it stands for: Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast. The amount of fiber and vitamins can get your system back into tip top shape in no time. I used this diet on D today!

Tell me if you have any remedies you swear by ... I love to try anything new.

  2. Zicam is a lifesaver for me....and sleep, sleep, and more sleep. If I feel a cold coming on, I stay home from work instead of waiting for it to really hit me to stay home...it either goes away or the cold is a lot more mild! Last but not least, I go to my chiropractor for an adjustment when I feel like I am about to get sick - he does an adjustment that specifically is supposed to boost immunity! It works - it's amazing!

  3. Fresh juice - thanks to my Krups juicer I love! (over 10 years old...)

    I sware by the stuff:
    *2-3 oranges
    *1-2 apples or pears
    *4 small carrots
    *1 clove garlic
*about an 1/2 inch of ginger (i hate the taste of it..but it works)

and I drink Yogi "Cold Season" and "Throat comfort" teas - with creamed honey. (I LOVE creamed honey vs the regular stuff.)

    I also:
*stay away from diary and coffee *wash my hands a lot....normal soap does the trick
*change bed linens - especially pillow cases
*wash anything shared - towels, pillow cases (couch pillows)

    Feel better!
